How do I remove a paragraph symbol in Micrsoft Word 2000

I have a paragraph symbol showing in Microsoft word 2000. How do I remove it.
I tried reinstallig the program and it didnt help.
 
This is normal behaviour. Being able to display formatting information can
be very useful. You can toggle the display with CTRL+* or click the ¶ key
which may be on your formatting toolbat (or add it there if it isn't).

I did not have this button on my tool bar until I remved the formatting tool
bar and then showed it again, then the paragraph symbol came on and I could
then remove the symbol
 
CTRL+* would have done it also, and this is probably how you activated it in
the first place.
