How do I prevent autoformat from formatting entire document?

When I select a small portion of text and format it (i.e. by pressing <Ctrl>B
for bold), my entire document is changed to this style, not just the text I
selected. When this happens I have to "undo" (i.e. press <Ctrl>Z) and then
only the text I selected will have the changed formatting. A similar thing
happens whenever I use the toolbar icons (e.g. left/right/center alignment,
tabs, etc.)

This only started to happen when I started using Word 2003. It did not
occur with prior versions.

I've tried changing many of the autoformat setting but nothing seems to work
to turn off this "feature".

Any help somebody can give that will let me turn this off will be greately
appreciated.
