Automatically updating style problems

When I highlight a line of text and then apply formatting (such as bold etc)
it automatically applies the formatting to the entire document (rather than
just the highlighted text). To just get the highlighted text in the required
format i have to press the 'undo' button. This is really annoying and I want
to stop it happening.

When I press the 'undo' button, the pop up comment tells me that it is 'undo
automatically update style'. I tried the Help text and it advised to switch
off 'automatic update style' but I have looked at the autoformat settings and
the 'automatically update style' is unchecked.

Can anyone advise me as to how I can resolve this please.
