How to prevent Word from formatting an entire document?

How to prevent Word from formatting an entire document and limit the
formatting to the selected text?
When I format a text in a Word docuemnt (Microsoft Office Word 2003), the
entire document get formatted and I have to use the "undo" button to limit
the formatting to the selected text ... it's really a waste of time.
HELP, thanks!

It sounds to me like a style - most likely the Normal style - has been set
to automatically update. Check your styles and clear the 'Automatically
update' checkbox in the lower right corner and see if this fixes the
problem.
