how do I prevent auto installation

I am using a dual boot system. I tried installing a
firewire card in windows xp pro but every time I do so my
internet ceases to function. It works ok in win 98 though.

The question is, how do I prevent xp from installing the
hardware automatically.

Have you tried disabling the device through the device manager?
