How do I make toolbar customizations permanent in Outlook?

G

Guest

I have Outlook 2003 and Norton Internet Security 2005. On the tool bar for
Outlook, buttons have been integrated for Norton. This creates an
"additional" toolbar [a third row].

I can move that toolbar to the row above it and save vertical space on my
screen. However, I seem to lose that change whenever I exit Outlook.

Is there a way to keep my toolbar "customization" [i.e., moving the
Norton Toolbar up one level so that I save a row of space].

I have tried different things, but can't seem to make it stick.

You can try resetting the Toolbar by renaming outcmd.dat to .old but it
could also be that Norton "dictates" where the Toolbar is placed. In that
case it is not controlled by Outlook.

Thanks Roady! I do appreciate it. I tried finding the file, "outcmd.dat"
through the search function and was not successful. Do you know what
directory it resides in or how else I can make the change you outline below?

Make sure you include hidden files and folders in your search. By default it
is located in;
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Hi Roady, I found it.

I see what you mean by doing this...it saves the changes of the view of the
toolbar you set in Outlook. Unfortunately, it does not save the Norton
integration change.

Any other thoughts?

I expect other customizations are stored as it should? and only the Norton
one is goofing off? Contact Norton.

Yes, that is correct. Other customizations did store as expected. You'll
love what Norton told me [I had checked in with them a few days ago]...

They told me literally, "you need to contact Microsoft as obviously this is
a software error and Outlook does not work properly".

Hah.

I love when folks abdicate responsibility.

Haha, yeah, but I think we proved them wrong ;-)

What do the buttons do anyway? I'm not a big fan of virusscanners
integrating with Outlook as they don't offer any additional value in
protection and just cause headaches. Even when you execute a virus from your
mail (requires you to fiddle with Outlook security first) the
on-access-scanner will kick in which offers the same level of protection.
Headaches are;
-slow send/receive performance or even time-outs
-Outlook not closing properly
-mail being retreived by the virusscanner but not delivered into Outlook
-mail not being removed from the server (POP3)
-buttons not sticking in place ;-)

I know for sure I left out a few :)
