how do I mail merge a protected word document?

I've got a word 2003 document that I am trying to mail merge and one
component is a check box that I would like to have available for recipients
to be able to check off or not and this can only be available if I protect
the document.

I haven't tried to do this, so please explain -- what happens when you try?
