How do I keep spaces from wrapping to the next line in Word?

In Word, sometimes after a period near the end of a line, one of the spaces
will drop to the beginning of the next line in Word instead of staying on the
line with the period. What's up with this?????????

The only way I know to have a space as the lead character on a word-wrapped
line is to insert a non-break space.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Compatibility | uncheck the
"Wrap trailing spaces to next line" box | OK.
