How do I get USB 2.0 HighSpeed Controller

I have a Dell Latitude C640 laptop and I purchased an AC powered High Speed
2.0 USB hub - when I plugged into USB port on my laptop, I got message that I
do not have a high speed controller installed on my computer. I am really a
novice when it comes to figuring out computer problems and I truly love IT
people - do I need to buy a controller card or can it be downloaded?

Thanks for your help. (Or should I just buy a new laptop???????)

The Latitude Cxxx series are old.
Buy a new laptop.

Otherwise buy a PCMCIA to USB 2.0 card.
 
I have a 10 year old Sony laptop that I use a plug in card, in the PCMCIA
slot to give me usb 2.0.

Dell spec says it is 845MP chipset.

The Southbridge chip is the part that would have USB on it. ICH3-S.
It has three UHCI controllers and zero EHCI. No EHCI (Enhanced) means no USB2.0.

You can crosscheck this analysis, by using a utility that
reports hardware characteristics.

The PCCard slot, and purchase of a USB2 controller on a
card, is a solution. Verify the interface and dimensions are
the right type for your computer, before purchase.

You may have a nice usb 2.0 hub, but you are plugging it into a usb 1.0
socket on your laptop. Thus its the old story of 'only as good as the
weakest link', meaning that the laptop is the weak link and you only get
1.0. Its a 2 lane highway merging into a 1 lane.

As others have said, buy a PCMCIA card if you need it. But I would
question if the PC itself is going to handle the 10 times faster data
throughput if its a really old PC. I'd do some legwork or buy with a
return policy if it were me.

ITYM ' ... three *O*HCI controllers'. I very much doubt that a laptop that
old has anticipated USB3.

I have an HP Pavilion ZE4315us with Windows XP home. I tried installing
several PCMCIA cards but while Windows recognizes it as a "PCI card" it does
not recognize the driver as applicable to the card and I get the Yellow
exclamation point in the Hardware list. I have tried several PCMCIA cards
(including a wireless Network card) and even reinstalled windows to no
effect. Is it hopeless?
