I prefer the old windows 98 SE settings and want my new xp to be the same. I
would like the Document and Settings folder split up in to a settings folder
where is should be- the windows directory and a My Documents folder with just
my documents, none of this user crap!!
Please help me if you can.

Thanks

Whilst you may be able to move the default location you will stil;l haver a
specific 'my documents' folder for each user.

This would be regarded as useful for those people where the PC is used by
sveral other, typically in the home environment.

Thus this feature allows each user to have their 'own' PC. Display
resolution, wallpaper, desktop shortcuts, internet favourites etc.

So for the majority the good outweighs the bad. As usual the minority may
suffer some inconvienience.

For the few who don't like it, they can always spend the next 100 years
writing their own operating system

While you could redirect some of each users folders, \Documents and
Settings\ is staying where it is.

Others have answered in part, and you can fairly easy change each users "My
Documents" to point to the same physical folder such as "C:\My Documents".
But what you cannot do is get rid of the "Document and Settings" folder
entirely. In addition to the obvious "My Documents" folder it also contains
"per user" settings & files in its folder structure. One all important
piece of this user profile (as it is known) is the currently logged on
user's registry settings contained in a file called "ntuser.dat". IF you
are the only user of the machine OR you have no reason to separate out each
user's information into separate profiles, you can simply have one account
such as "home" or similar and use it for all of your work. Then you won't
have the problems with various separate "My Documents" that seems to bug you
so!
