This happens when on Internet and I have had to leave the computer until the
battery goes flat to restart. This 'trick' didn't work last time and now I
can't open anything.

Wouldn't it be quicker to remove the laptop battery?

I would think that holding the power button down until it shuts off would be
even easier.

Maybe - but I had assumed that the user had tried to switch the laptop off.
If the hardware is completely locked, removing all power should reset it. If
this keeps happening it is probably having a service agent check for a
hardware fault on the laptop.
