How do I get highest quality analog video capture

I am using MS Movie Maker and recorder from my VCR to my tuner card (I am
running a Dell E510 running XP MCE). All worked fine with capturing, saving
to my HD and creating a DVD. The problem I have is that the playback quality
is poor. When I play back the contents from the DVD on my TV or when I play
back the contents on my computer, it seems like it has lost about 20% of the
videos clarity. I am going to be moving all of my old analog family tapes to
HD, but I want to keep it as high quality as possible. I guess I really have
two questions:
1 - Is there a way to do this and end up with little or no quality loss?
2 - Should I be using some other software to perform the video capture?
Thanks

If your main goal is to make DVD copies
of your VHS home movies...you don't need
a computer. A DVD Recorder like the
following example may be worth a look.

What format did you save the captured movies in?
A good answer to this type of capture is to purchase a Dazzle80 or Dazzle90
which is a pass-through device you can hook the RCA and/or SVideo cables
into. IT connects to the computer via USB and will likely give you the best
results possible under the circumstances.
