How do I get a GMail account?

GMail Drive shell extension

And conversely;

One might use GMail to access free software. To download & use Google
Talk one must have a GMail account.

Either way, it sounds pretty relevant for this group.

For what it is worth, you can get an Google account at this webpage
but you do not get the gmail account. Google kicks you off to a page
that tells you that your new account is invalid for gmail and that
simply by creating a Google account does not get you a gmail account.
They reiterate that you need an invitation.

So, if anyone has an invitation available, I would like one if you
please.

Thanks,

Poor logic there. A free pair of shoes would be off-topic. But since
gmail is software that is free, and this is a discussion group for
free software, well there you go.

If I was offered a free pair of shoes I would question: "what's wrong
with them?"

I haven't read the charter for this newsgroup but the title is
"alt.comp.freeware" and not "alt.comp.free.software" which suggests to
me and possibly other uninitiated that anything free and to do with
computers could be discussed here?
I don't agree with it, but we all have to live with things we don't
agree with.

I think the Sun should rise 3 hours earlier than it currently does but
the Sun keeps me in the dark so I just live with it.

Well, you have a good point there.

Hi John,

alt.comp.free.software would be a really, really, really, really, really, really, really
bad/confusing name for a *Freeware* newsgroup. ;) "Free software" is not necessarily free of
monetary cost. See:

http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

Suggesting the purpose of the newsgroup is less than clear seems like a stretch to me (or wishful
thinking) but perhaps some people really do need to see "this is off-topic" posts to help them
understand that free and Freeware are not synonyms. . .

a brief guide to on-topic/off-topic follows for those who need one. . .

Freeware is *software*. It's software that is 100 percent cost free. Freeware and only Freeware is
100 percent on-topic in alt.comp.freeware.

Other "wares" that have no *monetary* cost have varying degrees of acceptance by newsgroup
participants. See ACF's Posting Tips web page: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/Posting.php

$ware is 100 percent off-topic in alt.comp.freeware. Software related free "stuff" is 100 percent
off-topic in alt.comp.freeware.

Many people in the group may be interested in a particular thread about free "stuff" - that does not
make it on-topic. Such threads are usually kept short out of consideration for newsgroup
participants who are not interested in off-topic posts.

Any questions?

Hi Susan,

In future posts please consider that many people would think that
someone who would be saying really, really, really, really, really,
really, really would be stupid.

They'd have a point. . . FWIW - that was a lame attempt at humor. . . :(

No, Susan, it wasn't lame, it was fresh :)
I appreciate it, sometimes helps.
