Hi

Either type

winver

from Start>Run or right click My Computer and select Properties. Either
option will tell you which version of XP you are running + notice of any
Service Packs that have been installed.

Click on Windows explorer (Start button>allprograms>accessories>windows
explorer) In the windows explorer window click the Help option on the main
toolbar. from the drop down menu click the About option. Your version number
is there. For example my version is Version 5.1 (build
2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301:service pack 2)

thanx.. it tells me version 5.1 / build 2600 xpclient xxxetc.. is there any
significance to this version/build?

when i go to get updates, it alternates on its recommendations between sp1
and sp2.. i was told that someone had put sp1 on it..

appreciated your prompt response...really

Hi

If you right click on My Computer then select Properties - the number of any
Service Pack installed will be on the last line under "System:" on the
General tab. How do you mean WU alternates between SP1/SP2?

my comp. says xp pro ver. 2002, winver says version 5.1/build 2600.. is any
significance attached to this info? it says no services packs installed, but
if i got to windows updates ans scan, it tells me i need sp2, not sp1...?

i now know how to get the version information via all of the ways previously
listed, thank you.

when i go to the update site, scan my computer for available updates i get
inconsistant recommandations, approx 50/50 for SP1/SP2...i was informed that
the history of the machine was that SP1 had previously been installed, and
not uninstalled to the best of their knowledge.

the information i get back from winver is version 5.1 - build 2600.. no
service packs.. before i new how to get the version information i tried to do
an express install of SP2 (updates choice), it then told me i needed to get
SP1 first..

BTW, the real issue that prompted updating is that WMP9 and 10 sometimes
explorer are using 100% CPU and causing massive inconvience.. i just
installed the recom. HOTFIX.. but the problem remains...any answers/solutions
would be famntastick..

Hi

SP2 is the lastest one - and incorporates all the Updates from SP1. Saves
having to install SP1 then SP2 afterwards.

It is unnecessary to install SP1 before SP2 is installed. SP2 includes
SP1 updates. Try installing SP2 and see if that helps you. People have
experienced problems with the Express Install on occasion. You might
want to download the full SP2 package, install it and then revisit the
update site. Use this link to download SP2 to your hard drive then run
it

hi,

i have installed the sp2 and the other 20 or so recommended hotfixes and wmp
still has the same problem.

Am I correct in assuming that ~100% CPU usage by WMP10 (was 9) in not right?
Have had the problem with explorer.exe on the machine as well, I have
installed the HOTFIX that was associated with the WMP problem as recommended
by MS, but there was no improvement.

Also, if the WMP is closed via task manager or right-clicking on its taskbar
button the app. is removed from task managers 'applications' tab, but music
will still play and wmplayer.exe will still exist in the ' procesess' tab
with 100% CPU usage and a fluxating mem. amount from 40-120K.

Thanks for your time again, I hope I am not asking silly questions.

Firstly I appologise as my computer wouldn't let me commence my own mail
topic, so somehow I cashed in on your topic ,,,, soz

Ive just purchased service pack 3 (windows xp) and previously had I think
windows 95 (but it was apparently a dodgy copy). We have installed the
service pack 3 and yes yes yes,,,,, there is no volume at all. I have tried
help and support to no avail. I have also tried some hints on here to no
avail.

There seems to be a problem with D drive. I can get media player to play
video clips but no sound.
When I go into Sounds and Audio Devices, there is no audio device under
volume, when I try sound and try to play a windows default sound - nothing,,,
It looks like (an I really don't know) like maybe the hardware is incorrect
or there is no hardware??

I tried Start, All Programs, Accessories, entertainment and volume control
then i get a message "NO ACTIVE MIXER DEVICES". Then follow the next steps
which is Control Panel, Print and OtherHWare devices and Add Hardware then
blow me down,,,,,,, it tells me to insert the installation cd (which im
guessing is the disc labelled Windows Home Edition) and install hardware this
way,,,

How do I install off of this disc when we have already been through and
installed everything on it,,,,,,

Can someone help please????

You need to first identify the manufacturer, make and exact model for you
sound device.
You can use any of these utilities to get information on your systems
setup.

Once you have the information needed, go to the manufactures support site
and download/install the latest drivers for your specific OS and device per
their instructions. Some download packages include a install instruction
text file and some don't, so have a good look on the download page for any
instructions or a separate instruction download.

If you have any problems, please post back a response in this thread with
details on what you have tried and what problem(s) you may have.

How old is the computer? What is the make and model?

Computer hardware has been transformed since the days of Windows 95!

Hope this helps.
