how do I delete messages in outlook without opening mail?

I don't want to open emails to delete them in case they contain viruses. Any
suggestions?
 
Assuming you are using Outlook 2003, just right click on the item in the
inbox and select delete. (With older versions, you might have to turn off
the preview pane. Toggling the preview pane should be under the View menu.)
