How do I count the number of characters, including spaces, in a li

For eBay I need to create titles of 55 or less characters and spaces. My old
version of Word used to have a counter at the bottom which showed me at what
position in the line my cursor was at. I knew that when my cursor was at the
end of the line if the figure was 56 or less my title would fit into the eBay
forms.

This counter seems not to be present in the new version. Does anyone know
where it is?

Assuming you're talking about Word 2007, right-click the status bar at the
bottom of the window and click to put a check next to "Column".

I am also trying to get word count to work in Word 2007 but I don't have a
status bar at the bottom of my page at all. I looked under view but status
bar is not an option. Is this a special add in I need? I can't find anything
in the online help that tells me how to "view status bar".

You cannot choose not to display the status bar in Word 2007, so it must be
there. By default it includes the Views bar, a Zoom slider, and (I think)
page and section info. In addition to the line and column information, you
can also include a word count; you can click on that to get the number of
characters (with or without spaces) in the document or a selection.

Thanks Jay.

Problem solved! If only the help system in Word 2007 was as helpful as you!

This works if you are just typing free text into a doc but I need to count
characters in a cell in a table. Do you have any suggestions for that using
Word 2007?

If you select the text in the table cell (not the whole cell only the text)
and double click the Word count on the Status Bar, the dialog will display
the count for the selected text.
I don't think the Status Bar Word count display can be configured to display
only select text. It will only display the whole document word count. Sorry.

By default, the word count on the status bar *does* display the word count
for selected text (along with the total word count).

Ms Barnhill; Of course you are correct, the status bar display shows the word
count in the format "selected text word count / whole document word count".
In my posting I forgot to say "Character count" which the OP is asking for,
I can only get this displayed by double clicking the status bar.

Ah, indeed so. I'd lost track of the fact that we were counting characters
and not just words.
