I have a document with multiple chapters and many pictures and figures. I
want to put each chapter into a separate file, but have the page numbers and
figure numbers continue throughout the document and have the table of
contents list the page numbers for all the document.

I did this in word perfect about 12 years ago but I cannot figure out how to
do it in word 2007

Hi aa

there is a (somewhat) built-in method of splitting up a file according
to headings, if you have used the build-in heading styles. You'll find a
description at:

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.word.docmanagement/msg/35783573b786881f

Take heed to the advice!

I a not sure, however, that all the "numbering strings" (page numbers,
chapter numbers, etc.) are retained while you open up one of the smaller
files later. They are built to work right again in a MasterDocument
scenario, and while you edit SubDocuments, you would not care about the
exact chapter number ...

ISTR code that renumbers such files (at least page numbering) for you,
but fail to dig it up right now. Maybe one of the developers in a .vba
group will help you (find or code).

Though you had better come up with a good explanation why you need to do
this in the first place, I'd say ... ;-)
