How do I change the name of a computer on network?

I named it "Rich" but for some reason windows added a bunch of junk after
this. (rich-w1dqfxk5ct)

have a look in control panel > system >computer name

or if its not the computer name but a user account , you can change names in
control panel >user accounts
 
thanks, but I created another with teh correct name and now have two and
want to get rid of the (longer) first one. I don't know how to delete it. ??

This sounds like you made a new user account. There can only be one
computer name. To delete the user account you don't want, log in with a
different user account with administrative privileges. Go to the User
Accounts applet in Control Panel and delete the unwanted account.
