Ok, here we go... (EDIT: Dunno what happened with the color and italics but I seem to have made a bit of a pigs ear ot it. Oh well, it's readable...

10 GREAT TRUTHS

1. If you don't read the newspaper
you are uninformed,
if you do read the newspaper you are
misinformed. -- Mark Twain

Probably true in Mark Twains time but in these days of online news only the second part applies. Especially the second part.

2. I contend that for a nation to try to
tax itself into prosperity is like a
man standing in a bucket and
trying to lift himself up by the
handle. --Winston Churchill

Spoken as a true blue MP, partly true I suppose, depends on the level of taxation and in which band the taxed fall into.[/i]

3. A government which robs Peter to pay Paul
can always depend on
the support of Paul. -- George
Bernard Shaw

In these days this applies more than ever.

4. Foreign aid might be defined as a
transfer of money from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries.
-- Douglas Case,
Classmate of Bill Clinton at Georgetown University .

90% true but there is always a hidden agenda when foreign aid is given, governments don't give aid out of the goodness of their heart but mostly to win trade and concessions, so folk who whine that cash given to African nations should be given to UK ex-soldiers and pensioners are missing the point somewhat.

5. In general, the art of government
consists of taking as much
money as possible from one
section of the citizens to give to
the other. --Voltaire (1764)

It would appear that way wouldn't it but my own view is that this statement is pure codswallop.

6. No man's life, liberty, or
property is safe while the
legislature is in session.
-- Mark Twain (1866)

WTF is the legislature?

7. The inherent vice of capitalism is
the unequal sharing of the blessings.
The inherent blessing of socialism is
the equal sharing of misery. -- Winston Churchill

He would say that wouldn't he. What a twat.

8. The ultimate result of shielding
men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.
-- Herbert Spencer, English Philosopher (1820-1903)

Now there's something I hadn't considered, I suppose it may translate as 'wrapping folks in cotton wool does them no good' but could equally mean 'A man needs to experience a kick in the nuts to understand pain'. True? Dunno.

9. What this country needs are
more unemployed politicians
--Edward Langley,
Artist (1928-1995)

Yes!

10. The government cannot give to
anybody anything that the
government does not first take
from somebody else.

--Common Sense

Depends how you look at it. If nationalised industries make a profit then that profit is the nation's property is it not? And most everything else that governments spend is from taxation which to me seems a fair system if it's applied fairly. So, kinda true-ish.
