How do I change the font from Symbol?

Hi,

Throughout using Word from 6.0 onward I've been unable to change the font
from "Symbol" to another font ... all I get in place of characters are little
boxes.

However, when I copy the text written in Symbol into a less fancy word
processing program I get "readable" text again, which I can then copy back
into Word.

Is there a way to avoid this detour?

No, Word has some nasty hard-coded stuff including their
backward-compatible symbol implementation forcing last code page usage
for existing Word symbol tables instead of directly mapping to
Unicode.
