Some fonts not available under "insert symbol"

Using word v. 2000 I have need to insert "GDT" (Geometeric Dimensioning &
Tolerancing" symbols into my reports. The font is in the character map (amgdt
or gdt) but does not appear in the list under "insert symbol".
How might I make the font appear in the insert symbol list so that I can
assign a keyboard shortcut key to the symbols that I want to use?
Someone suggested copying the symbol(s) into the autocorrect feature, but
this doesn't seem to work as expected. The symbol comes in as the alpha
character that represents the symbol. I must then click on the "undo" button
in order to change the alpha character to the symbol.
Please advise. this is driving me crazy (and it is not a very long drive

That's a completely different critter. (I spent 22 yrs in drafting so I'm
very familiar with that.) GDT characters are symbols but chances are the
font doesn't consider them such.

I'd suggest selecting some good road music.

In Word 2000, the following procedure should work for you:

In later versions of Word, you can choose any font you like in the
Insert>Symbol menu, so you do not need that command. It updates the list of
entries in the registry that are considered "Symbol" fonts.

However, for your purposes, I think I would make AutoCorrect entries or
assign keystrokes to them, since you will need them frequently...
