How do I change default Personal Folders File?

C

Chuck

I originally set up Outlook to operate on my XP system.

I recently installed Vista on a seperate Hard Disk and for the time
being had it point to the XP pst file (on disk G as far as Vista is
concerned).

That way I could use Outlook regardless of which system I logged into.

When I use Vista, I have 2 sets of Personal Folders - the first (and
default) is the one on disk G (the Xp drive) the second is the Vista
version on disk C.

I am now happy enough with Vista to make that my default OS and want
to relocate the pst file to the correct location on Disc C.

I have copied the "G" pst file to the Vista location on "C" and it
now shows all the mail in bothn sets of Personal Folders, BUT all
mail operations are still only reflecting in the old set of Personal
Folders. ie incoming mail goes to that Inbox etc.

My question is how do I now get Vista to recognise that as the default
location and download new messages to the correct inbox. Can;t find
any setting that allows me to change the default location for the pst
file.

Once I do that, wil I be able to just delete the old set of Personal
Folders?

Thanks

You did not even provide your Outlook version.
Apparently you also have not read any of the posts here on the correct way
to migrate Outlook data. Please do so and post back with what you do not
understand.

In order to utilise a common Outlook pst between XP and Vista, I made
extensive use of the existing posts on this forum, and successfully
set that up and have been using it for the last month.

I no longer need to "migrate" any data. I have the folder where I
want it - I just need to get Outlook (in Vista) to now point to its
normal default location C:\Users\Chuck\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

I have downloaded and read the previous 4000 posts to this forum, and
did not find any explanation as to how to do that.

I have also spent a fair bit of time searching the web (including
Microsofts site) for an answer and have not been successful. I found
one article which suggested a registry change to point to the default
folder. I tried that and it has not worked.

Incoming mail is still going to the old location on Drive G

I apologise if my research skills are not up to your standard, but
then I wouldn't need to make use of this forum if i were as skilled as
you - would I.

I understand that MVP's must get annoyed at answering the same query
time after time, but as I said I have not encountered this issue in
any of the previous 4000 posts (admittedly only reading headers and
those few posts which looked like they might have some relevant
detail).

I will be grateful for any assistance - if its too much trouble, then
don't worry about it. Life will go on ;-) and I'm sure I'll
eventually find a solution.

OK I think I have resolved this for myself.

Playing around with the menus, I came across Tools\EMail Accounts\View
or Change and in the "deliver new e-mail to the following location" I
have 2 sets of Personal Folders listed.

I presume if I point to the "other" one, that will change it.

I also presume I can then somehow delete the redundant set of folders.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, after stopping and restarting Outlook it will change.

Right-click the root of the one you don't want and choose Close.

Yes that worked. Thanks

Mmm, when I right click on the root (Personal Folders) the Close
option is greyed out. It is even greyed out if I open the tree from
the root.

When you moved this PST file, what exactly did you do? Whatever steps you
took corrupted your profile by creating a ghost PST file. Create a new
profile from scratch. This time use the directions we post here:
1. In the new profile, open the PST file you want to use.
2. Set it to be the default.
3. Restart Outlook
4. Close the new PST file that your new profile created.

OK - all now set as I want it.

Thank you
