How do I change a .tif file to a .jpg file?

When someone e-mails me a pic it is saved as a .jpg, but when I scan a pic it
gets saved as a .tif file. And my computer won't let me use .tif files as
desktop backgrounds.

What is the difference in the two file types anyways? (.tif and .jpg)

Any help would be greatly appreciated... still new at this. Thanks.

Your scanning software should allow you to choose the format. You can also
open the image in a photo editor such as Irfanview or Serif Photoplus then
from the File Menu choose Save As or Export to save the file in a different
format. You can find free versions at the links below

Life would be easier if we could view the source code
