How do I add strikethough to buttonbar?

Showing my age. I've used every version of word on mac and pc since it was
first written. In one version, ctrl+shift+click on 'strikethrough' (or any
of the format checkboxes) would add a button similar to bold, italic, or
underscore on the format bar. Does such a feature still exist?

Not sure how to do this with the method you describe, but you can certainly
do it this way:

1. Open the Tools | Customize dialog. There are half a dozen ways to do
this, but the easiest is to double-click on an unused area of any toolbar.

2. On the Commands tab, select the Format category and scroll down through
the commands to find Strikethrough.

3. Select Strikethrough and drag it to a toolbar.

4. Close the Customize dialog.

I have changed my formatting toolbar repeatedly the way you describe to add
the strikethrough tool. Each time I restart Word it is missing from the
toolbar, and I have to add it again. Any ideas how to make the change
permanent? I've tried changing my Normal.dot file and also installing SP1.
Neither helped.

Failure to save customizations in Normal.dot is typically caused by a
misbehaving add-in. One such is the original Adobe Acrobat 7.0 add-in. See
the last section of
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm. If you don't have
that one, then try
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx which has
instructions for finding all the add-ins.

This excerpt from the link you provided seems to be the key: "Furthermore
the inclusion of this add-in [by Acrobat 7.0] flags normal.dot as 'saved' so
changes to normal.dot are not flagged on closing and not saved automatically.
You can force such changes by selecting SHIFT+File then Save All"

After doing that, when I quit Word and came back, the strikethrough tool was
still in the tool bar. Thanks!

Do you happen to have Adobe Acrobat (not Reader) installed?

If so the PDF Maker add-ins are most likely what are causing the problem.
Customizing toolbars (new or built-in) is still being hampered by those
dlls. If you remove the Office folder from ~Program Files\Adobe\Adobe
Acrobat 7.0\PDFMaker\ you'll be able to make the customization stick with no
problem... Unless you put the folder back

I thought this had been rectified, but apparently not.

Follow-Up: If Acrobat is the problem, make sure you update it to current
version (7.0.7), although 7.0.5 is supposed to fix it also.
