Can I create just a simple outline?

In a long-ago version of Word, when I wanted to auto-generate an outline, I
got a very useful document that changed levels with a simple Tab or
Shift-Tab. Now it is a multi-step process and I see in the newest version
that it there is yet another step added. Now I must go to Outline View, then
format for multilevel Outline Numbered within the Bullets and Numbering, then
when I want to go to a sub-level I have to use the tab to shift the line in
one tab space plus use the Increase Indent button to change to the next level
numbering. At one time this was all done simply by chosing Outline Numbered
and using Tab or Shift-Tab. Also, now I get all different font sizes and
colours and italics when I just want a neat, 12pt black un-bolded font
document. Is there a way to simplify the process?

Unfortunately, you don't say what version of Word you have now. If it's Word
2002 or 2003, go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type and
check the box for "Set first- and left-indent with tabs and backspaces."

Thanks Suzanne. I am using 2003. I tried what you suggested but it functions
exactly the same as before. I will be instructing students how to create an
outline and many of them will be using either Office 2003 or 2007 (depending

Well, you have to have outline numbering styles applied to the paragraphs
for this to work, yes.
