Creating outlines in Word

Why doesn't word indent my outline levels when I press the tab key. It
leaves the outline level the same and only gives me an indention. I want the
tab key to indent the text and produce another level to the outline. I want
shift-tab to shift the outline back to the previous outline level. What do I
need to change? It used to do it before I upgraded to 2003.

Hi Jason,

Works fine here. Do you use the built-in heading styles?

The shortcuts Alt+Shift+Left and Alt+Shift+Right should work in any case to
demote/promote headings.

Since Alt+Shift+Up and Alt+Shift+Down are very useful to move selected
headings/text up and down, these shortcuts are good to know anyway.
And they work in any view, not just in Outline view.

Regards,
Klaus

Other useful shortcuts are Alt+Shift++ and Alt+Shift+- to expand/collapse
levels.
And Alt+Shift+L to toggle "View first line only".

And of course Shift+up/down to select text, or Ctrl+up/down to move a
paragraph up/down.

Since those shortcuts involve Alt, Shift, and the cursor keys,
Alt+Shift+Up/Down (for promoting/demoting) may well be "simpler" than
Tab/Shift+Tab in the long run...

Klaus

Doesn't make a difference for me: Tab and Shift+Tab work for the built-in
heading styles, no matter what the setting is.

BTW, in the list of useful shortcuts for Outline view, I forgot Alt+Ctrl+1,
Alt+Ctrl+2, Alt+Ctrl+3 for "Heading 1" to "Heading 3" and Alt+Ctrl+N for
the "Normal" style.

Klaus

Since I use a fair number of outline-numbered lists but almost never use
outline-numbered headings, I had not discovered this.
