Auto-formatting on outline lists has changed?

Somehow my auto-formatting on bulleted and numbered lists has changed. It
still automatically recognizes and formats a single level list that is
lettered, numbered, or bulleted, but it won't let me "tab" in to level 2 (or
"shift + tab" out of level 2 to level 1). I have to show the outlining menu
and do it manually.
So, it used to be:
1. text, then enter = autoformat outline level 1
enter, then tab = autoformat outline level 2
enter, then shift + tab = autoformat outline level 1.

Now, it will only format outline level 1, then hitting enter then tab
results in outline level 1, then a tab space.

I don't know if I am explaining this well but it isn't apparent how to set
the settings so that it will autoformat the outline the way I used to have
it. Thanks for any advice/help in advance.

You don't say what version of Word you have. This is a simple Options
setting, but it's in different places in Word 97/2000, Word 2002/2003, and
Word 2007.
