How did 3712 do this?

I have anti-virus program and a firewall. I don't know why I kept getting
the 3712 shit and it hajacked my browser, even though I restalled my
windows. How did they do that? ActiveX, Javascript? I did not know those are
that powerful and why doesnot MS stop the backdoor?
