How can you tell who accessed a file?

I have a user who is paranoid that someone was accessing a file of theirs
because of an error message an application gave her (which said someone else
was accessing it at the same time). It's a shared file but she swears that no
one else would have been in it. I don't have auditing setup on the folder the
file is in. Is there some other way to see who accessed it?

Auditing is the only way to determine what user accessed a particular file.
