How can I turn off Norton AV?

S

The Symantec support site is not accessible tonight, so maybe someone
else has seen this problem.

I have Norton Anti virus 2004 with Win XP Home edition. Currently auto
protect is OFF and I can't enable it. Email scanning is enabled and I
think that this email scanning feature is hanging my email app (Eudora
6). I can't download new email and then the little download wheel just
spins forever. Eventually the whole program hangs. Until I fetch mail,
Eudora is otherwise functional.

The Symantec support site lists a similar problem auto protect and
email scanning and I would love to know what to do. I tried Live
Update a couple of times. The update wouldn't complete installation,
because NAV was still running and won't be shut down. I'm also running
Zone Alarm without problems.

I noticed this trouble a few days ago when the power went out for more
than a hour on a nice sunny day. The UPS battery didn't carry me
through this outage, but has got me through the usual brownouts and
the flickering lights. I hope that this may just a coincidence.

The Win XP and NAV 2004 were a clean install in this past June. I
haven't updated to SP2 yet. The hardware is 3 years old custom
desktop, with more that enough power under hood for my needs.

First, I would like to turn off NAV, so I try live update and/or a
fresh install. Is XP, Eudora 6 and NAV2004 a bad combination?
Suggestions.

TIA

Starting with the last item first. My opinion is that NAV2004 and
anything else is a bad combination. The best use for NAV2004, again
in my opinion, is to use the installation CD as a coffee coaster and
get some other antivirus product.

What is the date of your virus definitions for NAV2004? If they are
more than a week old then something may have gotten by the protection
and your computer could be infected with one of the newer viruses.

Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do a free online virus scan
of your computer and see what that finds. Or you can download Stinger
(free) from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and run it to clean the
most common of the current crop of viruses from your computer.

To uninstall NAV2004 go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.
Select the entry and then click on Remove. Note that there will also
be separate entries for Live Update and for Live Reg in the Add/Remove
programs and these should be removed as well. You can then try
reinstalling it and see if it will work properly.

Note: In addition to checking for viruses you should also clean up any
spyware on your computer at the same time. See MVP Jim Eshelman's
Quick Fix procedure at http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Good luck

Oh well, NAV is paid up for now. My old NAV version used to work. Of
course, Eudora is not the program it used to be. It's much more prone
to crashing now. I liked it for the filters. I detest Outlook and
never wanted to use OE, because of my intense dislike of Outlook. When
I spend more time indoors, I'll check out the competition for AV and
email.

Nothing is up to date. NAV files are too corrupt now to update. I
could barely start up Windows even in safe mode, because of NAV trying
to scan. Live update looks like it would run, but I got an error
message trying to update the definitions.

My lucky day, I get a 404 message for the free scan at the
housecall.trendmicro site. Thanks for all the links, I will check them
out.

I finally got add/remove to get rid of the app. I also was able to
read the FAQ on Symantec support site. I will try to reinstall.

Funny, this al worked well last week. Maybe it is some nasty bug,
maybe it was the power outage. We had another brief outage again today
(not weather related either). There are just too many outages here, so
I will now have to shut down my PC off when I go off to work.
