How can I trick this printer into working

Nope, the information provided is basically correct.

HP and others were forced by contract to remove any drivers (printer,
scanner, digital camera) which used the Unidrive technology from
Microsoft in those drivers. That included Win 95/98 and ME and some Win
2000 drivers mainly.

I remember HP never produced proper updated full
functionality drivers for the next MS OS that came out thus relegating
perfectly good printers to the scrap heap....

This has always been a grouse of mine. The worst part of it is that HP
helpdesk swears blind that something is a "fully functioning driver"
when it isn't!
