Since I ONLY have 169 GB's of free space, it is hardly worthwile to compact,
to save space.Every time I delete Recycle bin, I am afraid to loose my files
that I want to save. There has to be some place in XP Serv. pack 2 where I
can get rid of this very annoying thing, Thanks, Luc Yes, 169 GB's

It has nothing to do with your 169 GB's of disk space.
OE has a serious problem with the size of the 5 basic folders files (Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items,
Drafts and Deleted Items).
When these five folder files reach critical size (that size is debated, but is some where between
100 MB and 500 MB)) you loose mail messages. The compacting is done to prevent this problem. But
even the compacting caused the loss of email messages or entire folders. Hence the Critical Update
makes a backup of your folder files and then deletes the backup if the compacting process went well.
You can stop this backup and deletion by removing critical update KB923694 in the Add/Remove applet
in the control panel. But you loose some other protection too. You might want to read up on
KB923694 before you decide to remove it.
