outlook compact folders

One day,outlook express asked me if i wanted to compact my inbox to save
space ,or whatever,so i clicked yes,and now all my mail messages have
disappeared. i can see where they are stored , i think , as .dbx files , in
the my documents/local,blah blahbut i want to know how to retrieve one [or
all ]of the [now compacted]email messages. i cannot open the dbx. files or
see any headers . i guess i should'nt have done the compacting , but i did'nt
know it would get rid of all my mail messages...
