compact problem

I'm using Windows XP and Outlook Express 6. I was recently prompted to
compact my Inbox. When I answered in the affirmative, my most recent
emails disappeared (past 5 days). I didn't notice any interruption in
the compacting process. I checked the dbx file and the emails aren't
there. Is there any way to get my recent emails back?
