How can I re-enable the "Unsafe removal of device" warning?

Hi,

I know most people want to disable this, but for some strange reason, I
like it being there. However, I think someone has clicked on the "Don't
show this again" button when my printer was turned off and the message
popped up - now, whenever I remove a USB device from my Windows XP
machine without stopping it first, I don't get prompted with the
"Unsafe removal of device" warning.

I've searched all over, but have only found that most people want to
disable this, and not how to re-enable it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,
Matt

This should get you o right screen/menu.
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
3. Expand Disk Drives, right-click your storage device, and then click
Properties.
4. Click the Policies tab, click Enable Safe removal, and then click OK.

Hi Dennis,

I only have the option to optimise for safe removal or for performance.
Safe removal is selected.

Having said that, this appears to be a global setting - i.e. I'm not
prompted when I disconnect any device (printer with built-in storage,
USB disks, MP3 player, etc). I used to be prompted, but I think
someone has ticked the "Don't show this again" messgae and I want to
reset this back to default.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Cheers,
Matt

Not 100% sure but I think I read somewhere that warning was removed in the
SP2 service pack because of people complaining about it. It also was
addressed in newer chipsets. So I guess I'm asking if you have recently
installed SP2 or installed a new board.

Hi Bud,

This machine was installed as XP SP2 and the safe removal of hardware
popup has shown previously. I think someone has ticked a "do not show
this again" box somewhere, as it definately was there until about a
week ago.

If you go to the properties of the drive. Then select hardware, click on the
USB device and click properties. Select policies you should see the settings
for optimization, there you can set the one you want.

Hi Neil,

I guess I'll just have to resign myself to the fact that this isn't
going to work. I tried that and I sitill didn't get prompted. in any
case, it would appear that it's a global setting and not just a couple
of devices (printer, mp3 player, flash disks, etc..)

Cheers,
Matt
