How can I prevent editing read-only documents?

Greetings!

I often want to edit documents that we keep in SourceSafe. I
frequently open my local copy of the document, edit it, save it, and
get prompted for the file name I want to use. Only then do I look up
at the title bar and see that my document is read-only. I want to know
that it's read-only when I start typing, not when I've spent two hours
on the thing!

Is there any setting in Microsoft Word that will prevent changing a
read-only document?

Thanks very much!

The document can be locked by the person who saves it, but not by the one who
opens it. What's the problem with saving a RO doc under a different name?
