How can I not download all pop3 message when creating new pst

My pst grew too large and I had to get rid of a bunch of messages.I was able to do this and access the purged .pst file. Problem is that Outlook re-downloads all of the messages, even the ones that are already in the in box. Is there a way to tell outlook to only download messages that would not be dupes?.

That's not normal behaviour - deleting already-downloaded messages should
NOT tell Outlook to download them again.
Is there something you're not telling us?

If Outlook is downloading all previous messqages, then you did more that
simply delete older messages. Something has damaged the information in the
mail profile that Outlook uses to remember what has been downloaded. If this
happened to me, I'd to one of two things: the first is to create a new, empty
PST, make that PST my delivery location, allow Outlook to download all the
messages to that PST, then switch the delivery location back to the original
PST. The second would be to log into the mailbox on the server using a web
interface, create a new server folder, and move all the old messages in the
Inbox to that new folder. Since POP has no ability to see messages in any
folder but Inbox, Outlook will not know there are other messages on the server
and won't download them. New messages coming into the server mailbox,
however, will be placed into the mailbox's Inbox and Outlook will see those.
You'll be able to access all the old ones online if you need to and, of
course, they'll still be in Outlook's local folders.

I think you may be misunderstanding me. I was able to purge my .pst. Outlook doesn't say to itself, "Okay, this message is already in his inbox, I don't need to download this one". Some digging on google told me that each message has a unique message ID. Can outlook be set to recognize that the ID for a given message already exists in my inbox and not download it?.

Err yes it does actually. What do you mean by "purge my pst"?

That's NORMAL Outlook behaviour. There is something you have done to your
Mail profile that is not normal or that you are not telling us.
What sort of email account are you using? (Purging normally refers to IMAP
accounts....)

Purge was my word. I got rid of a bunch of emails so the .pst wouldn't be so large.

I'm using POP3 from 1&1.

PLEASE respond to the post you are replying to and not your own. You may
find it easier to subscribe to this newsgroup direct instead of through the
forum you seem to be posting in.

As two of us have stated - deleting emails from a pst does NOT, in itself,
make Outlook re-download them.

Please, give us as MUCH detail as you can, including your version of
Outlook, operating system, and what AV application you are running.

You did more than you're stating. You can delete ALL the messages in your PST
and Outlook won't re-download them if it downloaded them before UNLESS you
damaged your mail profile or created a new one.
