How can I open pst outside of Outlook...

How can I open a pst, that is apparently too large for Outlook2000, so I can
reduce the size by deleting everything in the delete folder for instance?
Can it be opened with WordPad or ...? As I've read in other posts I'm
experiencing the same thing, SCANPST.EXE stops at phase 4 and reading still
other posts, apparently the problem is my pst file is too large--2,088,880 kb
(that's over 2 GB, right?). Outlook will not open it. I've learned my
lesson--I will do back-ups, I will delete more, I'll do whatever I can--I
just would like my old pst back--I repent...

Thanks, Marie.

..pst files cannot be opened by any application except Outlook. Try this for
some assistance:

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Marie asked:
