How can I make IE ask if I want to save or open a file?

[Annoyed]

Previously, when I clicked on a link to a zip file, IE would pop up
and ask if i wanted to save it to disk or open it.

After downloading a lot of zips I got tired of this and ticked the box
which said something like "don't ask me again". I assumed since I had
chosen to save that file to disk this would mean from now on it would
automatically save a zip file to disk when I clicked on a link.

However for some idiotic reason it now opens zip files when I click on
them, so as if it wasn't annoying enough originally I now have to
right click and choose Save target as... then get the popup to choose
the directory - WHY is there not a setting to chose a download
directory within IE, like Mozilla, so I don't have to be asked every
time?

Can somebody tell me how to get the old popup back, that asks whether
I want to save to disk or open? Or, if there's a way to have it
automatically save to disk when I left click on a link, how to do
that?

Right click on the link will give you more options.

Folder options> File Types is what you're looking for.
The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating system. The
possible paths are:

Explorer - View - Folder Options - File Types
Explorer -Tools - Folder Options - FileTypes
Start - Settings - Folder Options - File Types
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Folder options - File Types

Once there, scroll down to the .zip file (or whatever other type of download
file that you would like the save option dialogue box to appear for)
Highlight it (select) >edit (or advanced) button> and check the box for
"Confirm open after download"> OK> OK out.

Cheers, it did help. Sorry for not mentioning the OS (Win2k), I meant
to do so before I posted but must have forgot.

MS really needs to start updating IE, and looking at the features
other browsers have. If it didn't load quicker than the superior
Mozilla Firefox from the Quickstart menu I wouldn't even use it.

Anyway, enough of my whining, thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Glad you've gotten your desired result. So... your OS is W2K? I'll try to
remember that for the next time.

They have "updated" it, for those who can use SP2 for IE. (WinXP users). If
you want more features like tabbed browsing and stuff, you can try MyIE2. If
you want more safety in IE6 SP-1, You can "firefox it"... Disable (or
prompt) ActiveX; Disable Active Scripting; Prompt Java Script, to "de-fang"
malicious Web Sites and undesirable occurences from them. (see the link in
my signature for more details)
