how can i know if winXP sp2 is installed??

Rea Peleg

Hey eb
I see in general properties of my computer that
current service pack for my operating system (winXP pro) is 1.
Also in control's panel add/remove programs i see a list of many hotfixes
that relate to sp2.
So i am confused - is it possible to install hotfixes to a service pack that
isn't installed by itself on a computer?
Or sp2 must be installed prior to instalation of any of its hotfixes, and
the service pack property in my computer isn't updated?
How can i know for sure which service pack is installed
on my computer?
What happens if the original sevice pack 2 is installed
after some of its hotfixes had been installed?
Would these hotfixes need to be installed again?
Thanks for your attention

No it is not. The names in add/remove programs means that hotfix, at
the time it was released, was scheduled to be included in SP2. So if
you had SP2 installed you wouldn't need the separate hotfixes installed.
Or sp2 must be installed prior to instalation of any of its hotfixes, and

No, see my earlier comment.

The properties for My Computer is one way. If it says SP1 there, that
is what you have. You can also run winver.exe from the Start, Run box.

As you have started off with an incorrect assumption, these questions
are likely no longer relevant to your issue. To answer, Microsoft's
patching technology is robust enough that it won't downgrade a file or
remove a hotfix if you attempt to install an earlier version of a file
through one of their hotfixes or service packs.

You do not have SP2 but you have SP1. All the hotfixes that are listed with
SP2 in the names are/were to be included in SP2 release version. This is why
that if you were to look at the list, on a SP2 PC, you will not see them.

This is the same thing that will occur when you have completed the SP2
installation. Any hotfixes that have SP3 listed in their names, will be
included as part of SP3 release version (sometime next year??)

If SP2 is installed:

Start | Run | Type: winver | Click OK
If it says Service Pack 1, you do not have SP2.
If it says Service Pack 2, you have SP2.

Windows Security Center (wscui.cpl) will exist.
Start | Run | Type: wscui.cpl | Click OK |
Windows Security Center will open if SP2, you'll get an error if not SP2.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 will be listed in Add or Remove Programs.

$NtServicePackUninstall$ will be in %windir% or C:\WINDOWS (There may be one
of these folders that relates to SP1)

The hotfixes' reference to SP2 means that Microsoft intended ,at the
time the hotfix was released, to include it in SP2. (Newer hotfixes now
mention SP3, which doesn't exist, as yet.)

Or sp2 must be installed prior to instalation of any of its hotfixes, and
the service pack property in my computer isn't updated?

Start > Run > Winver.exe.

What happens if the original sevice pack 2 is installed
after some of its hotfixes had been installed?

The service pack installation removes the references to the hotfixes
from the Control Panel's Add/Remove Applet and deletes all of the
no-longer-necessary $NtUninstallKBxxxxx$ folders.

Would these hotfixes need to be installed again?

No.

One easy way of determining this is to look at the opening Windows XP
Splash Screen.

If the opening Splash Screen identifies which edition of Windows XP
you have (Home, Professional, Tablet, or Media Center) then you do not
have Service Pack 2 installed.

When Service Pack 2 is installed the opening Splash Screen is replaced
by a generic one that just says Windows XP and does not identify the
specific edition.

Good luck

The above two will not exist if your Windows XP was installed from an
integrated setup that already had SP2 in it.
