Microsoft.NET framework

Have just recently installed the latest version 3.5, with hotfixes. However
in Add/remove programs all the old versions are still there - from the
original, to 1.1, to 2.0 with service packs, up to 3.0 service pack 2 - can
all these previous versions be uninstalled just leaving the latest 3.5
version or are they required as part of it?

For example I know that when new Sun Java is installed the previous versions
can be uninstalled.
Thanks

It's a question which .net framework the developer may have been
depending on when he developed his software application. Since
it depends on that, if you need any, you probably need them all.
It isn't like Sun Java, where the latest version can replace the rest.

Hi Ozegirl,

..NET versions are not like "updates". Programs that need .NET 1.1 don't
need later versions and programs that need .NET 3 don't need earlier
versions. It would have been nice if MS would have thought this out a
little better.

You probably need to figure out which programs even require .NET. It's
possible that you installed all the versions because MS suggested it at
some point, rather than you actually needing it to run any programs. I
have seen that frequently.

Most programs that require .NET will include it on the install CD, if
needed. So you could uninstall all of the .NET versions, and then check
to see if all your programs run. If so, you don't need .NET at all. If
not, then reinstall the programs that don't run and the .NET version
required will most likely be reinstalled.

Too many workstations have all the .NET bloat and don't need any of it.

Ok thanks to all 3 posters, I think you've answered it.

I guess it's needed then because it's not something I would have installed
separately by choice.

Windows Updates can "sneak" them in.

Yep "... MS suggested it at some point..." ;-)
