How can I add personal notes to an email message?

I add personal notations to emails I am working on and typically print the
email and write notes on the paper. Is there a way to annotate emails?

Hi John,

the only way to annotate emails is, if you open an email under "Edit/edit
message" (or something simular).

Now I can change the original message with my commands.
