how add slide # for PowerPoint presentation. Tried help already

Hello,
I'm having hard time adding a slide number in a Power Point presentation.
I tried to add it to the slide master, but it didn't work.
Also I tried to add it as a footer, no luck again.
Any suggestions?

Click on View, Header and Footer, and put a checkmark in the slide number box.
