Hotfixes for SP2

San

I have XP SP1, but under the list of Hotfixes, there are almost fifty
hotfixes for SP2. Why are they there, and why would I need them if I do not
have SP2?

I have tried to delete the icon that automatically downloads updates, but it
will not respond to anything I do. It just sits where the clock is and says
Downloading 0%, but I don't know what that means, it says nothing else if I
right-click on it. I can't find this program under All Programs to delete
it.

Should I delete all these SP2 updates and Hotfixes?

I tried downloading SP2 once, and it said it would take 45 minutes, but
several hours later, it was still not installed, and since then, my computer
turns strange colors, mostly pink, at random times.

TIA,
San

All critical updates, released after SP1 was released, are denoted
as SP2 hofixes. Do not attempt to uninstall them because you'll
uninstall the post-SP1 critical updates.

Use the following tool to safely remove the uninstall files
for your existing hotfixes:

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries

Read the following:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Checklist

Then Download SP2 Directly:

I strongly recommend you to reformat your hard disk and reinstall Windows + SP2 (integrated if possible) so that your system is 100% secure. You don't need SP1 nor Rollup patch. What appears to have happened is that you have updated your system regualrly but no maintainance work has been done. Maintenance work includes deleting temporary and log files, IE6 temp files, cookies and of course backup files. You will release lot of hard disk space as well. Defragmentation will be simpler!

Once you have done this, I can guarantee you that your system will be very fast and very reliable with assurance that you don't have any malwares to make it vulnerable. SP2 will make it full proof!. You may not know it but SP2 is the wonder drug Microsoft wants everybody should be taking it.

Please make sure you have the CDs, and serial numbers for all your applications and OS to make reinstallation trouble free.

Hope this helps.

I don't know what reformatting my hard disk is, or how to do that, but I
have reinstalled Windows+SP2 and deleted temporary files, etc. and
defragmented. My system is ver-ry slow, and keeps turning a dark bright rose
color, sporadically, but several times everyday. I have gone to PCPitsstop
three times, and keep getting a good report, other than I could use more
than 256 ram, but not major problem. I don't know where to go from here.

Before I was able to follow through on your suggestion, I got a notice from
the automatic update that a new update was available, so I clicked on it to
download, and it was the SP2. I then went to the site to remove hotfix
backup files, etc. but it says that it will not work correctly with SP2
installed. thanks,
san
