hosts file

Hello all,

I have a user running windows XP. He is trying to use a
hosts file to communicate to his unix work station by
adding an entry in the hosts file. The file is located
under : c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. The file works
fine on other machines but not on his. I have tried
recreating it etc. with no luck. Strangely, the lmhosts
file does not work either - i copied the file from another
machine where it works, did a nbtstat -R and then a
nbtstat -c (no hosts in file was the message back)??

Any help appreciated.

What exactly do you mean by "communicate"? If it's about file sharing, then
it won't work. Unix knows nothing about the MS file&print sharing protocols,
unless you are installing and configuring on the Unix box Samba (or an
equivalent). If Samba is not an option, then you may use ftp to transfer
files.

I cannot ping the machine by hostname after adding the
entry. the solaris box will be running oracle and the XP
machine needs to connect to it via ODBC connection. The
user prefers to use hostname instead of IP address....
