Looking for a combination Hosts file manager/DNS lookup/traceroute utility.

For conventional host file usage, not for ad-blocking purposes.

Thx

Hi Bluemoon - Well, maybe not everything you've asked for, but CIP is very
effective in doing IP lookups for the express purpose of putting them in
your HOSTS file for DNS lookup purposes. Just import your Favorites, for
example, select all, clean then Go. Finally, save to HOISTS (and rename if
necessary). (BTW, be sure you name your HOSTS file just that - all caps, no
extension).
http://www.filelibrary.com:8080/cgi-bin/freedownload/Multi-Platform/n/105/cip500.zip
I use it regularly for this purpose with a combined lookup and ad blocking
HOSTS file. However, In my case, I have to save the Favorites IPs to a
Notepad file, then Copy/Paste to my HOSTS file just after the 127.0.0.1
localhost entry and before my ad block entries (which I get from here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt ) Recommended.

Hi Jim

Thanks. More or less what I'm looking for actually.

Problem is that when you try to run cip500.exe (a DOS file - 242 kb -
no version info) from

http://www.filelibrary.com:8080/cgi-bin/freedownload/Multi-Platform/n/105/cip500.zip

it opens a DOS windows & says it cannot be run in DOS mode.

I had previously run across a couple of other versions: CIP 5.00 SR7
v2.11.15.0 (241kb) & CIP 5.00 SR7 v2.1.5.0 (175kb) - both are windows
executables. Little confusing as to which is the latest version, but
2.11.15.0 looks like the newer according to to it's size & dates
added at the respective d/l sites.

Can you tell me which version you're running?

Thx

Excluding the traceroute part, a DNS caching utility may be what you're
looking for. For that purpose, AnalogX has a nice little util:

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/fc.htm

I've used it in the past and it works like a charm, but I came to the
conclusion that saving a couple of minutes of DNS queries per week
wasn't reason enough to bother me.

Hi Blue - I think that's probably a bad link nowdays. Try CIP500.exe from
here: http://www.webattack.com/download/dlcipfree.html I just tried it and
it will install OK.

That one is v2.01.005 (185kb - Mar 13, 2000).

Is that the version your currently using? Still looks like v2.11.15.0
is the latest.

That's an interesting addition or alternative. Thanks for the
suggestion

Hi Moon - What you're looking at is the InstallShield version number. The
version # of CIP.exe that I'm using is 5.00.1998 (which is the same version
that's installed by this download) dtd 1/1/2000, 23552MB. AFAIK, this is
the latest (only) one.

Hi Jim

Apparently all 3 versions, including the one you located at
http://www.webattack.com/download/dlcipfree.html are listed as
v5.00.1998, & it's easy to get misled unless you you test all 3, which
is what i did.

The friendliest version is at
http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?500000007704, which is characterized
in the "about" as a "Special Lockergnome Edition", while the other 2
are described as unlicensed copies.

I suspect that this is actually the version you are using. & not the
one at webattack, because I know you would immediately recognize the
shortcomings of the other two, the worst being a persistent & annoying
"stay on top" behavior for which there is no option to reverse.

If not, you should check out the one at winsite.

Amazin' how fast it resolves those IP's.

Thx again

You're right, Blue - That's apparently a different, earlier version (which I
also like better). :)
