Hosts File-Mac Equivalent?

Is there an equivalent to editing the Windows host file in OS X? I am trying to help a friend, and although I've used Macs at work, I'm not very acquainted with th ins and outs of them. I know this isn't the forum for it, but I have searched and cannot find an answer elsewhere, only the mention of a hosts file, but not how to simple edit to prevent access to specific sites. If someone can point me to a good ng, I'd be thankful.

Does a Mac have a folder called C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc?! I have come up with the info that they have a file \etc\hosts.
I know how to edit the Windows hosts, and I know that there are extensive lists online that can be added, but I was hoping to find out if the same thing can be done for Mac.

Because OSX is based on BSD, the /etc/hosts is the configuration file.
You should be able to edit this using a text editor. At least, this is
how you do it in Unix/Linux. You'd probably get a definitive answer is
you post to a Mac newsgroup.
