WinXP to Mac file transfers

I need to move files from my WinXP PC to a Mac (and back again) using a
USB flash drive. I've been told that the format/structure of files on
the two OS's is different. Will I be able to copy PC files to the flash
drive and then read them on the Mac (and copy files to the flash drive
from the Mac and read them on the PC) or do I need some sort of
software in order to share the files between the two systems?

TIA.

The two files systems for the most part are incompatible although the
Mac does a much better job of reading PC files. However, there are
some programs that create files which can be read both ways. MS
Office document formats can be read from PC to Mac and vice versa.
(Word and Excel.)

The different file systems are irrelevant in this case. What will be
important is that you have a program installed on the Mac (and vice
versa) that can read the files.
