Hosting and Playing Behind a Router Part2

G

Guest

This post is the second part of an earlier post by me on 2 people playing MW
Mercs behind the same router.

I broke down and got another router (LinksysBEFSR41) which is working great.
Without any changes to the default router config, my son and I can play in
the same MS Game Zone, MechWarrior Mercs game. I can even host TeamSpeak and
we can talk with each other during game play. The only thing left is to
figure out how I can host a game that my son can also join. Here is what I
have tried so far and it hasn't worked.

I used DXPort to open these ports:

2302-2311 on PC#1
2312-2321 on PC#2

In the Router, I've forwarded these ports:

2302-2311 (TCP & UDP) to PC1
2312-2321 (TCP & UDP) to PC2
47624-47624 (TCP & UDP) to PC1

We can still play in the same game room, I can host TeamSpeak and we can
talk, I can host a game but my son can't join. His PC starts to go through
the join process but then gets kicked back out to the game room lobby.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mack

(WinXP Home SP2, Westell WireSpeed DSL modem, LinksysBEFSR41, Pacbell-Yahoo
ISP).

Hi Mack,

On the router, try opening the full range (2300 to 2400) for PC #1 and PC #2.

Tried opening the range you suggested but it didn't make a difference. Do I
need to open other ports? Could it be something to do with the WinXP SP2
Firewalls. Even though we have made "Exceptions" for playing on Mercs and
"The Zone", maybe because we are playing behind the same router, it is
causing a problem. Would turning off the Win Firewall on one or both of the
computers make a difference? Thanks, Mack

Here's general information in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article on ports
which need to be opened for games:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=240429 Remember, how these ports are
opened depend on whether you are on a direct connection to the Internet, or
behind a base station/router, etc. You may need to "forward" the ports to
the machine on which the program is installed. There is information in the
Knowledge Base article listed above, plus you should consult the specific
support information for the game you're running.

Good advice Chris. :)

Also Mack if you want to troubleshoot the issue by disabling
the Windows XP SP2 firewalls on each machine, go ahead,
but please be sure to activate them once the tests are done.

Thanks for the help guys. I read the knowledge base article. Maybe it just
can't be done with both of us behind the same router. I'll keep trying
different options and combinations. I might get lucky. Mack

What I believe is happening, Mack, is whatever system you're playing into is
blocking the second version. A lot of online games do that to prevent
people from ganging up and ruining games by being at the same location. You
might want to check some of the support or chat areas for the games
involved, but I believe as long as you're sharing the same IP this will
happen.

Linksys support page suggest turning on "port triggering" in their knowledge
base Answer ID number 687. The last line in this report is "Once you've done
this MSN Gaming zone should work just fine."

link
http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin...F9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9wYWdlPTI1&p_li=&p_topview=1

I have yet to try this myself to get AOE II working so two of us can play
from one location with others on the zone.

Good Luck!
