I have downloaded both patches for each other the age of empires games I play online (The conquerors edition and The age of kings) I am logged on under administrator and i have opened the ports I need to I have windows xp Media center and when I go to an age of empires game room everything is fine and then when the host launches it takes me to setting up multiplayer and everything seems ok but then it says "Unable to join game"what can I do to solve this problem could it have something to do with the fact that both my games are about 2 years old and arent compatable with my computer

The games are compatible with Windows XP Media Center Edition. What type of
internet connection do you have and do you have more than one computer
networked or sharing the internet connection?

I run on a local area connection and I also have a network adapter with a router so I can play ps2 games online I have Mcafee and the standard ICF firewall that comes with Windows XP. What ports need to be opened to play age of empires 2: The Conquerors or just Age of Empires 2 age of kings. Thanks a lot for the link i'll have to check that out and see if I can figure this thing out from there

I usually have only 1 computer on this connection but I sometimes hook my laptop to it also.

Ok that's true. I noticed that. But why didn't vinay mention the
other ports on the sympatico site? Merenaries will not host without
those ports and he never mentioned them. That's a shame.

Is age of empires 2 a direct x game and also would having the router going to my ps2 to play games like Socom 2 U.S. Navy seals have anything to do with my problem. I opened all the TCP ports and I still have the same problem would the fact that i have McCafee as another firewall screw me over too???

Hi Mikey,

AoK is a DX game;
It's possibly the router, just connect directly to be certain;
and yes, the software firewall can be blocking your AoK game.
Disable or uninstall it temporarily to verify if it's at fault or not.

What version of direct x should I download and what do you mean when you say try to directly connect...how do I do this

Hi Mikey,

1. Download and install the complete DirectX 9.0b from:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-4c98-baf3-0c67e7f3751f/dx90update_redist.exe

*Antivirus / Firewalls can corrupt the download and installation,
it's highly recommended you disable them during this process.

2. To connect directly, plug your modem into your computer instead
of the router.
